The Almond Tree Tour, Excerpt & Giveaway

Almond Tree tour
Almond Tree Book CoverThe Almond Tree by Michelle Cohen Corasanti “An epic drama of the proportions of The Kite Runner… Grabs you from the first page… A gripping and compassionate work of fiction” —Huffington Post The unforgettable story of a young Palestinian boy whose mathematical gifts allow him to escape the difficulties of life as an Arab Israeli, The Almond Tree is a beautifully crafted debut novel written by a Jewish American woman from the perspective of a Palestinian Muslim male. It is about the power of love, the price of hatred, and the possibility of redemption. Even as a young boy Ahmed Hamid struggles with knowing that he can do nothing to save his friends and family. Coming of age under Israeli martial law, his entire village operates in fear of losing their homes, jobs, and belongings. But more importantly, they fear losing each other. On Ahmed's twelfth birthday, that fear becomes reality. With his father imprisoned, his family's home and possessions confiscated, and his beloved brother Abbas succumbing to hatred in the face of conflict, Ahmed must find a way to care for his family and find a better future for himself. Gifted with a mind that can solve mathematical equations, he uses his intellect to take an inspiring journey that will lead him from his war-torn homeland to a life in America he could never have imagined for himself. A sweeping story of family, love, and friendship told against the devastating backdrop of half a century of conflict, The Almond Tree is a powerful novel that allows us to walk in one extraordinary Palestinian’s shoes and see the world through his eyes. “Corasanti’s accomplished debut novel offers a humanistic look into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict...Sensitive, moving…” —Kirkus Reviews
 Excerpt:
Mama always said Amal was mischievous. It was a joke we shared as a family – that my sister, just a few years old and shaky on her pudgy legs, had more energy for life than me and my younger brother Abbas combined. So when I went to check on her and she wasn’t in her crib, I felt a fear in my heart that gripped me and would not let go. It was summer and the whole house breathed slowly from the heat. I stood alone in her room, hoping the quiet would tell me where she’d stumbled off to. A white curtain caught a breeze. The window was open – wide open. I rushed to the ledge, praying that when I looked over she wouldn’t be there, she wouldn’t be hurt. I was afraid to look, but I did anyway because not knowing was worse. Please God, please God, please God… There was nothing below but Mama’s garden: colourful flowers moving in that same wind. Downstairs, the air was filled with delicious smells, the big table laden with yummy foods. Baba and I loved sweets, so Mama was making a whole lot of them for our holiday party tonight. ‘Where’s Amal?’ I stuck a date cookie in each of my pockets when her back was turned. One for me and the other for Abbas. ‘Napping.’ Mama poured the syrup onto the baklava. ‘No, Mama, she’s not in her crib.’ ‘Then where is she?’ Mama put the hot pan in the sink and cooled it with water that turned to steam. --

Almond Tree AuthorPraise for The Almond Tree “The story is spell-binding with universal appeal…” The Daily Star ” …a strong addition to coming of age fiction collections, highly recommended.” The MidwestBook Review “…one of the most riveting books I have read… Corasanti takes a realistic premise and builds an interesting and highly believable story that only gets better as the pages fly by. While “The Almond Tree” is a fictional tale, much of it is based on the truth of what is today’s world, and as such there is also an important message located within. I highly recommend this book.” Charline Ratcliff / Rebecca’s Reads Author Michelle Cohen Corasanti Michelle Cohen Corasanti received a BA from Hebrew University in Jerusalem and an MA from Harvard University, both in Middle Eastern Studies. A Jewish American, she lived in Israel for seven years and was married to a Palestinian Muslim for several years afterwards. Nearly a decade in the making, The Almond Tree grew out of the many stories Michelle heard and witnessed while living with Palestinians and Israeli friends and family she knew and loved in Israel and at Harvard. She currently lives in New York with her family.

The Dragon's Egg Tour Guest Post & Giveaway

The Dragon's EggThe Dragon’s Egg (Relics of Mysticus- Book Three) by H.B. Bolton

Sure, the glass castle floating over Evan’s head makes him uneasy, but that’s the least of his worries. With each step inside the Dungeon of Dreadful Dreams, he must battle against his worst nightmares. One after the other, wispy smoke-filled bull sharks come at him — he must remember they’re only illusions pulled from his imagination by those dreaded shadowlike hands. If only the vengeful dragon circling above was also an illusion and didn’t have his mind set on destroying the one person who can control him: Emrys. Inside the castle’s glass tower, Emrys sleeps in an eternal slumber, and Evan’s uncertain whether he can save the great wizard. Especially now that Emrys’ former student, the Lady of the Lake, has joined forces with the cunning immortal Alamaz. Together they have already stolen the Dragon’s Egg, but their greed doesn’t end there. The Siren’s Pearl calls to them, and that means only one thing … Atlantis is in trouble. Join Evan, Claire, and Dunkle — along with a few other unlikely heroes — as they travel across the realm of Medieval Legends, float through the Ancient Isle of Avalon, plunge inside the Dungeon of Dreadful Dreams, and be there when Atlantis rises once again.

The Serpents Ring

The Serpent's Ring (Relics of Mysticus- Book One)

Evan and Claire Jones are typical teenagers, forced to go with their parents to yet another boring museum … that is, until something extraordinary happens to make their day a little more than interesting. After following a strange little creature into a closed exhibit, Evan and his older sister, Claire, discover the Serpent’s Ring, one of the magical relics formed from the shattered Mysticus Orb. Purely by accident, they have awakened its powers and opened a portal to Sagaas, land of ancient gods. Before the siblings can comprehend what has happened, the Serpent’s Ring is wrenched from Evan’s hand by an enormous fish and flown back to Aegir, the Norse god of the sea. Evan and Claire, accompanied by a band of unlikely heroes, must retrieve the Serpent’s Ring before Aegir uses its immense powers to flood all the lands on Earth.

tricksters-totem-cover-low-res-200x300The Trickster's Totem (Relics of Mysticus - Book Two)
Life has returned to normal for fourteen-year-old Evan and his older sister, Claire. That is until Dunkle, a clever but stinky little imp, pays an unexpected visit to their school. He has come to take the siblings back to Sagaas, the mythical realm of the gods. Once again, a Relic from the ancient Mysticus Orb has fallen into the wrong hands. Only Evan and Claire, with their unique mystical abilities, can help find it. Through the power of the Trickster’s Totem, a coyote trickster has escaped. His laughter echoes throughout the realm, as he spreads mischief and mayhem. He burns an entire crop of popcorn, carves his grinning image into sacred artifacts, and things really get interesting when he shape-shifts into Evan’s friends. Claire and Evan must capture the Trickster, retrieve the Totem, and be careful not to become sidetracked by robotic Steampunk animals, “sweet” pixie-like Pains, and a problematic mermaid … all while dodging Mothman-like aces. Most surprising, Evan discovers the true reason dragons exist in the Native American Spirit World.

Bolton lives in Florida with her supportive husband and two highly spirited children. Shh, can you keep a secret? Not only does she write books for the young-at-heart, adventurous sort who yearn to dive into a good young-adult fantasy story, she also writes spellbinding, heart pounding women’s fiction. These particular books are written under the name Barbara Brooke, but that’s another story, altogether.

My dream interview by H.B. Bolton

C.S. Lewis: We’re delighted you could join us today.

Me: For me, this is a dream come true. I’ve never been to the Eagle and Child pub. I can see why you meet here. I could sit for hours, relaxing by the fireplace. In fact, I feel like I’m in the shire, nibbling chips with Bilbo himself.

J.R.R. Tolkien (pipe in hand): To be sure, to be sure.

C.S. Lewis: It is a pity we didn’t invite the others from our little group, the Inklings. You would be enthralled at the conversations we have.

J.R.R. Tolkien (chuckling through rising rings of smoke): I recall having a few deplorable ones as well.

C.S. Lewis: You know, Tollers, we shouldn’t discourage her from paying us another visit. After all, she did travel all the way from the States and had to cross through time just to offer us a little insight into the mind of a 21st-century fantasy author.

J.R.R. Tolkien: Agreed. Ms. Bolton, would you care for another pint?

Me (edging forward my enamel mug): Thank you, and please call me Heidi.

J.R.R. Tolkien: I’m interested in the concept behind the first book in your Relics of Mysticus series, The Serpent’s Ring. You know, I was practically raised on Norse stories. What inspired you to send your characters to Asgard?

Me: My ancestors came from Norway. Even my dad’s name is Norwegian: Thor. I thought it would be fun to have my characters, Evan and Claire, come across a few of the lesser-known gods and creatures from Norse myth. Did you know that the sea god Aegir had nine daughters, and each one was named for a different characteristic of ocean waves? What am I saying? Of course, you already know that.

C.S. Lewis: You don’t, however, include Norse mythology in your second book.

Me: I’m fascinated by all stories from mythology and tales from legends. In the second book, The Trickster’s Totem, I send Evan and Claire into the Native American Spirit World, where they must capture the mischievous Coyote Trickster.

J.R.R. Tolkien: Fascinating, indeed. My friend here and I often discuss how more stories ought to pull the human spirit into the realm of the divine.

C.S. Lewis: They do tend to add to life, don’t they?

Me: I think so. It’s my dream to inspire children by taking them to mythical lands.

J.R.R. Tolkien: Never forget that a single dream is more powerful than a thousand realities.

Me: Speaking of dreams, Mr. Tolkien, I once heard you experienced having the same dream come to you almost every night.

J.R.R. Tolkien: That is correct. Only, I refer to the troubling nightmare as my Atlantis-haunting. You see, in sleep I had a dreadful dream of the ineluctable Wave, either coming out of the quiet sea or coming in towering over the green inlands.

Me: I’ve had a similar reoccurring nightmare. Only in my dream, the wave towers over the condominiums that sit off the Florida coast. A few times, there have been ominous sharks swarming inside the wave. My character, Evan, has had similar dreams. I open The Serpent’s Ring with one of them.

J.R.R. Tolkien: My dream was somewhat exorcized by writing about it. You see, when Faramir speaks of his private vision of the Great Wave, he speaks for me.
C.S. Lewis: Dreaming expresses the movement which becomes possible at a point where two worlds interact. Time then becomes dislocated, and both worlds appear dreamlike.

J.R.R. Tolkien: Quite right.

C.S. Lewis: In any case, Heidi, I’m quite looking forward to discovering what happens next in your series.

Me: Thanks. I plan to have Evan and Claire visit Avalon in the third book. A well-known wizard is in trouble, and could use their help and mystical abilities.

C.S. Lewis: Arthurian legends — fascinating subject indeed!

J.R.R. Tolkien: Might I assume dragons will be included?

Me: Well, a literary giant once said, “It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him.”

J.R.R. Tolkien: Rather sound bit of advice, if I do say so myself.

Me: I believe you once did … or will one day.

Living Whole Without a Better Half ~ Spotlight

Living Whole Without a Better Half: Biblical Truth for the Single Life by Wendy Widder

There are more singles in--and out of--the church today than ever before. Wendy Widder knows the struggles of being single from the inside out, and she has something to say. While there is no shortage of books about singlehood on the market, Widder's approach is markedly different. In Living Whole Without a Better Half readers study the character in Hebrews 11. Widder uses these Biblical examples to show readers how to embrace singleness as an abundant life and a God-given gift, not as an unfortunate stage they should move past as quickly as possible. By examining the lives of biblical heroes such as Abraham, Moses, and Jacob, she reveals that trying to bargain with God to follow our plans and timing often keeps us from appreciating the opportunities he places in our path.
Widder makes her case with wit and a wry humor that readers will appreciate and come back to again and again. Now with updated statistics, and a new preface, Living Whole Without a Better Half includes study questions that make it a great Bible study or small group resource.

My Review
No matter if you are single for the reason that you want to be or due to not finding the right mate, ‘Living Whole without a Better Half’ is an insightful, wonderful read. Wendy will take you on a journey through parts her life that all single or married folk can find something to relate to. She describes in short stories how she lives on her own and how it can be lonely and rafted with ongoing challenges. She expresses how she has managed without a spouse, and how she has learned to rely on her God and savior Jesus Christ, finding blessings and purpose in doing so.

What I loved about the book, is how humble Wendy is in describing her life as a single woman. She is not too proud to admit her frailties and iniquities. I also loved how she elaborates on certain Biblical characters, such as Abraham, Moses and more. She makes their lives relatable to the reader. Also, I quite liked the large side notes in the chapters focusing on some of the major points. At the end of each chapter there is a list of questions, making this read perfect for group discussions and Bible studies.

All in all, I found this book refreshing and inspirational. Wendy has great wisdom on the subject of singleness as well as explaining the trials, aspirations and blessings that the patriarchs in the Bible faced. I recommend this book to singles as well as married. There is something for all to glean in this book.

Missing Lily Tour

  Missing Lily
“You don’t know who I am,” I whispered. He didn’t move—either away from me, or closer—and after an interminable moment, I stepped back and hurried out of the house. He didn’t follow me as I fled into the night. Lylin was not used to being alone—much less alone, hurt, and lost. So when she is separated from her guard and forced to abandon her horse, she counts herself lucky to stumble upon a manor house. Still frightened by those who chased her into the night, she keeps her identity a secret, calling herself Lily as she accepts the help of kind servants, and the compassion of Lord Fallon. When they fall into an easy friendship, she wonders if her secrecy was too hasty. However, as she gets to know the manor and its residents, Lylin discovers that she’s not the only one hiding secrets, and it may be a very good thing that her host doesn’t know her true identity as a member of the royal family.

Author Annette K. Larsen
I was born in Utah, part of a crazy, fun family of nine. I grew up in Flagstaff, AZ and St. Louis, MO before striking out on my own college adventure in Virginia. I decided to try my hand at writing novels after I was married and living in Idaho. I write clean romance because it’s my favorite genre, but often difficult to find.
I have Charlotte BrontĂ« to thank for the courage to write novels. After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally, a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself. My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to face the reality of sacrificing what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but in the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it. I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Fortunately, one often leads to the other.

Excerpt
Just as I started to relax, the sound of voices made my eyes pop open, and I sat up, forcing my breathing to quiet. The doors at the other end of the stables slid open and someone entered, carrying a lamp and shaking water from their clothes.
“I’m not seein’ things, Lord Fallon. Someone is in here,” a voice whispered. I sat still, unable to move. The lamp shifted, casting two men in ominous shadow.
“I believe you, Giles. That’s why we’re here.” His Lordship sounded not at all concerned, as though he were merely humoring his hired man. He sounded more tired than anything.
“The lamp, Giles.” The light transferred to His Lordship’s hands, illuminating his face and leaving me astonished by his youth. He looked to be in his twenties, and I wondered how such a young gentleman held the title of Lord. “You’re sure it wasn’t an animal of some sort?” he asked as he took his first steps down the long line of stalls. He would find me soon enough, and yet this prospect didn’t terrify me as it had moments ago. Lord Fallon looked not at all frightening. He wore trousers, a loose fitting shirt that hung untucked, and a full-length coat that fell in languid folds from his shoulders. Water dripped from his rumpled hair, sliding down his face and into his well-trimmed facial hair.
“T’weren’t no animal, sir.”
“The horses aren’t agitated. They would be if someone threatening were about.”
When the light fell on me, Lord Fallon’s eyes widened. I tried to push myself to my feet, but he drew a sword that I had not realized was hanging at his side and pointed it at my throat. I fell back against the wall, crouching, my chest aching from the heavy beating of my heart.
“I don’t take kindly to vagrants on my property.” His fatigue had vanished. Now he looked menacing—terrifying.
My voice was barely audible as I forced a reply. “I’m not a vagrant, sir.”
His eyes narrowed in question. “Remove your hood.”
I raised my hand slowly and pushed the fabric back. His eyebrows raised, even more surprised by my appearance than by my voice. The sword lowered. “Giles, take her inside and put her in front of a fire. She’s freezing.” And with that, he walked away and I slumped back to the ground, numb with relief.

Cover Creation Process & Cover Reveal - The Summer Sacrifice

summerreveal (1)
Today we are excited to share the cover process via images and the final cover for the middle grade fantasy The Summer Sacrifice by Holly Hinton.  The book is scheduled for release on June 21st, 2014.
The cover artist has provided us with the images to show the process of creating the cover.
Thumbnails-a-b-c small
These three concept images were the first pictures David created for The Summer Sacrifice. Thumbnail A evoked the atmosphere of a mysterious fantasy, B gave the impression of a teenage classic, and C was more poetic in tone. Holly settled on a mixture of A and B as the basis for David to start constructing the final cover.
Thumbnails-color-mood-d-e-f small
These drawings were 'speed-painted' by David. They are rough in nature as their purpose was to help decide the cover's general colour scheme.
Pencil-line-art-artwork small
David drew a detailed sketch of the friendship group. He used this as a guide for the final painting of the group on the cover. He kept the 'camera' low, almost on the floor, to make the characters look more heroic and the serpent bonfire bigger. He worked to get a sense of wind into the image to give it an outdoor feeling and to add dynamism, and also to break up the composition's symmetry.
06-work-in-progress-detail
David paid great attention to working out the many light sources in the painting, and particularly how they would interact with the faces and bodies of the five central characters. There is a strong backlight from the fire, a mix of bounced lights from the environment, and diffuse bluish light from the sky.
work-in-progress-global small
This version of the cover is close to the final one. The serpent and the title still required small changes, and David also did some other general polishing, including painting the moon's glow onto the vines and leaves framing the picture, and adding the stars.

This screenshot shows the front, back and spine of the cover from inside Krita, the open-source software David uses to create his work.

About the Author:

hollyHolly grew up in a small, sleepy village in Suffolk. The acting bug hit her at age nine, when she was asked to play Baboushka in the school nativity. That same year she played the lead role of a naughty black poodle in a pet parlour themed ballet, and she thought she had made it. Years passed, but the acting bug didn’t. She went to Goldsmiths, University of London to study Drama, after which she completed her actor training at Arts Ed.
Writing a book was never part of the plan. But life’s full of swerves and surprises and ideas dropping into people’s heads. Holly had an idea drop into hers, and that idea became The Summer Sacrifice, and The Summer Sacrifice became the first book of the Master Game Series.
